Located on the periphery of Canary Wharf in East London, the project is a retrofit of the existing Billingsgate Fish Market building into the programme of an Arts Library. As a part of the City of London’s plans to decentralize London’s Markets, the Fish Market will be relocated to Dagenham, leaving the building vacant and available to redevelopment. In opposition to current demolition plans and aiding wider inclusivity and integration of Canary Wharf with its surrounding communities - my project will see the building transformed, expanding the networks of the current building.
Reinterpreting the current themes of the Market, the building will become a space for the exchange, trade and gathering of knowledge and experience, in addition to material goods. The project also looks at the extended role of the Library within modern society - seeing it as a ‘catalyst for culture’ and space for assembly. My scheme will therefore fuse the library with performance, seeing the typology as an important urban node in the re-activation of Canary Wharf.
